Job Purpose

Design, develop, and maintain mechanical components and systems for a variety of industries, and purposes.

Job Description

  • Analyze problems: Use analysis and computer-aided design to design or redesign mechanical and thermal devices or subsystems.

  • Investigate equipment failures: Diagnose faulty operation and recommend remedies.

  • Develop and test prototypes: Analyze test results and change the design or system as needed.

  • Oversee the manufacturing process: Agree on budgets, timescales, and specifications with clients and managers.

  • Improve production processes: Design and implement cost-effective equipment modifications to help improve safety and reliability.

  • Develop a project specification: Work with colleagues from other engineering disciplines to develop a project specification.

  • Develop and use new materials and technologies: Research and test manufacturing and assembly methods and materials.

  • Manage people, projects, and resources: Depending on the role, mechanical engineers may need to manage people, projects, and resources.

Job Skills

Technical Skills:

  • Engineering Design: Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA for designing and modeling mechanical systems and components.

  • Product Development: Experience in designing, prototyping, and testing mechanical systems and products from concept through to production.

  • Mathematics & Analytical Skills: Strong understanding of mathematics, including calculus, trigonometry, and statistics, for analyzing engineering problems and solutions.

  • Materials Science: Knowledge of materials and their properties to select appropriate materials for different mechanical applications.

  • Thermodynamics & Fluid Mechanics: Understanding of heat transfer, energy conversion, and fluid dynamics as they relate to mechanical systems.

  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA): Experience with FEA software to simulate and analyze mechanical stress, strain, and deformation in components.

  • Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM): Familiarity with CAM software for planning, managing, and optimizing manufacturing processes.

  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple engineering projects simultaneously, including planning, budgeting, and resource allocation.

  • Mechanical Testing & Prototyping: Skills in testing mechanical systems and prototypes, analyzing data, and making necessary design adjustments.

  • Robotics & Automation: Knowledge of robotics, automation, and control systems for designing and implementing automated mechanical systems.
